What's between your legs?

During last Belgrade Design Week I had opportunity to listen lectures of very few masters of architecture and design I admire a lot. One of them was New York based graphic designer Mirko Ilic. If don't know him, certainly could remember yourself on design for "Bijelo dugme"music disk cover (Bijelo dugme-very famous ex-Yugoslavia rock musician band) His lecture named "What's between your legs?" symbolically presented idea of bizarre graphic design for comics, cd-s and dvd'-s covers, movie posters etc that repeating among years. We are all familiar with the between the leg shots made popular by film posters and CD covers (like for example Brazilian Girls) but whats the logic behind it? His explanation was that graphic designers spend the most time beside their's computer and notebooks, so after while they start to think about very significant subjects and themes like...What's between your legs? Ha. Question like endless inspiration or story with serious meaning? Frequenters of video stores will recognize the through-the-legs shot as a favorite poster motif of straight-to-video teen comedies. But Ilic’s slide show revealed just how pervasive a design idiom this is – so much so that we don’t even notice it anymore. Tracing it back to pulp fiction paperback covers from the 1950s, he dredged up examples of cover art for albums, magazines and comics, as well as film posters of almost every genre (although it was particularly popular with the producers of the Bond movies). Generally used to denote either sex or power, the legs frame is still unflaggingly popular. The trick from now on is to separate the thoughtless cliches from the ironic homages.
